Dr. Arias Scholarship Award for Writing!

2020 Academic Year

One $500 scholarships will be awarded annually to those with a focus and passion for writing. Applicants must have a minimum grade point average of a 4.0 (scale of 5) to apply. Winners will be selected based on writing potential. A 500-word essay on one’s writing interest and/or the importance of writing in their future plans and professional career of the applicant. In addition, applicants are required to submit a writing sample such as a short story, essay, or academic paper, not to exceed 2,500 words.

In addition to the monetary award, recipients will have access to Dr. Arias who will work with scholarship winners to develop their professional writing goals and enhance their writing. Winners may be asked to attend writing workshops and conferences (any associated expenses will be covered).

The application and all supporting documents must be submitted to ILACHE by Friday, May 29, 2020 by 11:59pm Central Time


  • Applicant must be enrolled as a full-time (12+ credits) undergraduate student during the Fall 2019 semester

  • Students must be in good academic standing with a recommended minimum GPA of 4.00 (on a scale of 5.00) at the time the scholarship is awarded

  • Submission of one letter of recommendation on letterhead from an advisor, counselor, professor or  administrator (a maximum of two letters may be submitted)

  • All majors are eligible

  • This scholarship is nonrenewable

Application Procedure

Applications will be considered INCOMPLETE and will not be processed if any of the following are missing.

  • ILACHE Scholarship Online Application Form - All supporting documents must be uploaded when submitting the application. The application system does not allow you to save your work and return to it at a later date.

  • Personal Essay(Maximum 500 words). The essay is an important part of the ILACHE Scholarship Application Form. It must be submitted online by clicking the button labeled "Upload your personal essay.”  We recommend you write and proofread your essay before starting the online scholarship application. The instructions for the essay are listed below in the "Personal Essay" section.  

  •  One (1) Letter of RecommendationAt least one letter must be written by a current or past teacher or faculty member who can speak about the applicant's academic experience, community service, and leadership activities. All letters must be on letterhead, signed, and sent as an attachment in PDF format to ilache.scholarship@gmail.com– subject line: Recommendation – applicant Last Name, First Name. Please give your recommenders plenty of notice to write a letter on your behalf.  

  • Transcripts Unofficial college transcripts are acceptable and can be uploaded in the Transcripts section.

Personal Essay

The personal essay is an important component of the application and is equivalent to an interview. The personal essay should address the following question (500 words maximum) and be uploaded online with your application.

How did I become interested in writing and/or what role will writing play in my professional career?

Deadline & Announcement of Scholarship Winners

Complete online application with all required supporting documents must be submitted no later than 11:59pm (Central Standard Time) on Friday, May 29, 2020.  The timestamp of the online application and emails will be used to determine submission time. Incomplete and late applications will not be considered. Scholarship winners will be announced on the ILACHE website in January.
